Did you read Marti’s contribution to Kate Rockwood’s article titled “Same Kid. New Trick” in the December issue of Parents magazine? The article contained new solutions to common child behavior problems, with Marti providing strategies for settling sibling fights over whose turn it is, motivating kids to do chores and getting kids to stay in bed once the nighttime routine is complete.
Here is an excerpt with Marti’s explanation about why a hall pass could work for a child repeatedly getting out of bed at night:
If your kid is getting out of bed 15 times, she’s probably just trying to get attention, says Dr. Erickson. The hall pass works because it’s a tangible reminder that she has a choice: the immediate reward of attention or the better reward of a morning prize. This kind of reminder also often works for dinners out in restaurants, when you can give your child a one-time pass to leave her seat.
